The UK Brexit party did not exist six weeks ago. Yet in a poll for the Guardian newspaper they are already polling at 34%. Labour and Conservative parties are both being hammered at the polls with this Opinium poll showing Labour at 21% and the ruling conservative party, at just 12%.
After just five weeks since the formation of the party (at the time of this poll), the Brexit party has more support that both former mainstream parties, combined. Confidence votes and opinion polls around the form of Brexit most favoured by the public are even more anti Parliament with the most common conclusion being draw, that the UK Parliament did something fundamentally against the interests of the majority of British people.
So why are some remain voters joining the Brexit party?
One only needs to look at the key basis on which the Brexit party have been tirelessly campaigning around Britain. They are campaigning on the basis of returning democracy and accountability to British voters. In essence, it is all about trust. Interestingly, the Brexit party, is uniting left and right, with candidates standing from across the political spectrum. It has advocates among both ‘leavers’ and ‘remainers’ that believe that democracy is not worth giving up.
Watching some of the rallies taking place around the country there seems to be a positive message, and optimism and passion that one can rarely see amidst the tired campaigning of mainstream parties. Whether it is the present Zombie Prime Minister, Theresa May, who is no longer fooling anyone, or the chaotic and occasionally, even overtly Marxist extremism which comes from the likes of Jeremy Corbyn and John Macdonnel.
If Britain finally gets to break free of the political monopoly of the corrupt, tired and now demonstrably incompetent former mainstream, two party system. Britain may get its first Brexit dividend early. This is certainly the only way there is ever likely to be political reform in Britain. Indeed, the Brexit party have already discussed the need to change the system and introduce proportional representation.
With the complete drubbing both parties received in local elections last week, it seems that the British are finally realising their danger. They have a system which is now so far from accountability, to the people that hired them, that Parliament felt it could turn its face from the people entirely. It is the former grass roots members of those parties which are now going to make them pay for their arrogance. Despite the best efforts of an entirely corrupt mainstream media, activism is now among the people themselves.
This can be borne out by the way in which the vast majority of the funding for the Brexit party has been generated. In an unprecedented way, almost 100,000 people paid twenty five pounds to become registered members in just 5 weeks. Representing a whopping 95% of the party funding. However, this is set to change as former donors to the Conservative Party, and to a lesser extent, the labour party.
As grass roots support surges, and people turn to the party that now represents British people and their rights most directly it is going to be very interesting to see how this manifests in seats in a European Union already facing surges in nationalist populist MEP’s being elected in the forthcoming European elections.
With labour having no serious answers to the Brexit situation and threatening yet another referendum and the democratic illegitmacy that would cause and the Conservatives having totally humiliated the country as the rather pathetic figure of a national leader is allowed to destroy their support for a generation, a party that promises total accountability to members, has solutions to business problems and a plan for Brexit rather than confusion and more uncertainty seems to be well positioned to change British politics forever.
This has to be a concern for Europe at a time when Eurozone economies and some of the EU’s main net contributors, are circling the drain.
If there was one mistake that the Brexit Party might have made, and which may delay their growth, it is the choice to only use “Paypal” as their own means of taking payment from prospective members. Many people cannot or do not use “Paypal”, particularly in the older section of the population. Others, simply do not want to. A broadening of the options, may enable many, many more new members to join subscribe to the Brexit party. Despite that, this is unprecedented growth from any party, let alone one just weeks from launch.
The British people are reminding their politicians that they will not have their fundamental rights stripped from them simply because a large number of the 650 members of parliament are determined to do so. History has many lessons concerning this situation, one unprecedented in modern times. It seems to be a lesson that THIS generation of Brits, are happy to teach the political establish of Britain again, lest they forget.
This is the first time in British history a party has risen like this to challenge the ruling class. Those sitting in parliament are probably far more shocked than ordinary Brits who can feel the palpable anger among ordinary people up and down the country. The Brexit party are expected to make huge gains in the European elections. It is going to be very interesting to see, following that, the campaign leading up to a general election. Will we see the Conservatives rendered the ‘third’ or even ‘forth’ largest party in Britain for the first time in modern history?. You dont have to look very hard to find life long Conservatives that have sword to never vote conservative again, and there are many, though perhaps not quite so many, in Labour, that feel exactly the same way.
Tired of being lied to, and fed a diet of now blatant propoganda and misinformation by the mainstream media who seem to became so blatantly biased, corrupt and overfunded, many people are now looking for integrity and accountability from politicians. Many, feel that this is not a quality that can be found in, the Houses of Parliament, in any quantity today.
